At: http://www.metronews.ca/entertainment/mia/details.asp?id=11282 Published October 5, 2005 MIA: Terence Trent D'Arby
Terence Trent D'Arby Age: 43 (born Terence Trent Howard, New York City, March 15, 1962). Claims to fame: Two giant hits from 1987's Introducing The Hard Line According To Terence Trent D'Arby Wishing Well and Sign Your Name. Where is he now? For starters, he's no longer known as Terence Trent Howard or Terence Trent D'Arby. Instead, he goes by the name of Sananda Maitreya. A couple of long-named album titles (1989's Neither Fish Nor Flesh: A Soundtrack Of Love, Faith, Hope & Destruction; 1993's Symphony Or Damn: Exploring The Tension Inside The Sweetness) didn't reap in the sales the way they did for the first album. Horrific reviews plagued Neither Fish Nor Flesh but were somewhat favourable for Symphony Or Damn and its 1995 followup, Vibrator. D'Arby was let go from his contract with Columbia Records in 1996. A
tenure at Java Records gave him the chance to record Terence Trent D'Arby's
Solar Return, but the disc was never released. He purchased the album's
rights and went on his way. During this period, dreams led him to the
aforementioned name change. As he put it on his website (www.sanandamaitreya.com),
"Once upon a time, an artist, a fish, woke up to find himself in
an era swimming in various kinds of music, the best of which touched him
as a fish swimming in water feels everything that the water contains."
O-kay! He now lives in Milan. IAN NATHANSON/METRO TORONTO |
