REVIEW WILD CARD (page 64) SOULROCK * * * * * (five out of six) TERENCE TRENT D'ARBY Der Ausnahmemusiker macht ein sehr gutes Album – doch wer wird es hören? Den mittelmäßigen Single-Auskopplungen ist es zu verdanken, dass mit den letzten beachtlichen D’Arby-Alben SYMPHONY OR DAMN und VIBRATOR das Interesse an dem Ausnahme-Musiker fast völlig erloschen ist. So ist seine fünfte LP WILD CARD lediglich über ProSieben.de und File-Exchange-Programme erhältlich (Details: S. 96), obwohl die 16 Songs zu seinen stärksten zählen. Auch wenn der Bläser getriebene, gefällig swingende Opener „O Divina“ zunächst einen Rückfall in die achtziger Jahre vermuten lässt: WILD CARD ist absolut gegenwartstauglich. Tonnenschwere Riffs wälzen sich über dreckige Digitalteppiche („SRR 636“), klerikale Chöre verdunkeln den Himmel über staubtrockenen, minimalistischen Funkbeat-Landschaften („Suga Free“) und ganz weit weg sägt eine verirrte Geige ein paar jazzige Läufe („Paradise Postponed“). Detailverliebt hat der Perfektionist alles arrangiert, und trotzdem wirkt THE WILD CARD mit all den wunderbaren Soul-Melodien, die sich D’Arby offenbar aus dem Ärmel schüttelt, warm. Einen Vergleich mit Kravitz oder – in seinen besten Momenten – Prince braucht dieser Mann nicht zu scheuen. Und hey, das Album ist umsonst! Boot your computers!
WEBSITE DES MONATS (page 96) Übersinnlich Im Traum erschien dem vergessenen Superstar Terence Trent D'Arby ein nuer Name: Als Sananda Maitreya nahm er ein grandioses Album auf, das nur online zu haben ist - umsonst. ESOTERISCHER ROCKER * * * * TTDPROMOTION.COM „Ich hatte eine Reihe von Träumen, in denen mich die Bewohner meiner Traum-Dimension ‘Sananda’ nannten“, erklärt The Artist Formerly Known As Terence Trent D’Arby auf seiner Website. „Es hat drei Träume gedauert, bis ich kapiert habe, dass sie mich meinen, dass sie ihre Energie genau auf mich richteten“. Sananda ist komplett auf dem Esoterik-Trip, verbringt seine Freizeit mit „Channeling“ und empfiehlt www-Surfern Links, die verheißungsvolle Namen wie /Lightnet/Celestial/Jesus2.htm tragen. In regelmäßigen Abständen hat er kleine Erkenntnisse, die er dann – je nach Beschaffenheit und künstlerischem Gehalt – in der „News“- oder der „Poetry“-Section mit uns teilt. Da die Plattenfirma Sony-Music sich offenbar weigerte, Terence ins Sananda-Land zu folgen, steht einer der talentiertesten Musiker der Gegenwart nun ohne Vertrag da, muss sein Album weltweit über Pro7-Online (?!) verschenken und Interview-Anfragen auf der eigenen Website entgegennehmen. Grafisch passiert das in einem relativ unattraktiv und esoterisch gestalteten Umfeld, inhaltlich ist allerdings einiges geboten. Der Meister selbst veröffentlicht hier Briefe und beteiligt sich am Dialog mit Fans, seine spirituelle Aura ist omnipräsent. Video-Interviews helfen, sich ein Bild vom Geisteszustand des Künstlers zu machen, der übrigens beruflich vorerst noch als „Terence Trent D’Arby“ veröffentlicht. REVIEW WILD CARD (page 64) SOULROCK * * * * * (five out of six) TERENCE TRENT D'ARBY The exceptional musician does a very good album - but who'll hear it? Thanks to the choice of average singles from the D'Arby albums SYMPHONY OR DAMN and VIBRATOR the interest in the exceptional musician died out completely. So his 5th album WILD CARD is only available via ProSieben.de and file-exchange-programs, although the 16 songs rank among his best. The horn-driven opening track "O Divina" makes one afraid of a return to the 80's: but WILD CARD is suitable for the present. Heavy riffs roll over dirty digital carpets (SRR 636), clerical choirs darken the sky over dry, minimalistic funkbeat-landscapes (Suga Free) and far away a lost violin performs jazzy music (Paradise Postponed). The perfectionist has arranged everything with his love for details. Nevertheless, WILD CARD with all it's wonderful soul-melodies, that D'Arby seems to have pulled out of thin air, creates a warm feeling. The man doesn't have to fear a comparison with Kravitz or - in his best moments - Prince. And hey, the album is for free! Boot your computers!
WEBSITE OF THE MONTH (page 96) Supernatural In a dream the forgotten Superstar Terence Trent D'Arby found his new name: as Sananda Maitreya he recorded a magnificent album that's only available online - for free. ESOTERIC ROCKER * * * * TTDPROMOTION.COM "I had a couple of dreams in wich the inhabitants of my dream-dimension called me 'Sananda'", TAFKATTD explains on his website. "It took 3 dreams 'til I realised that they were focusing their energy on me. Sananda is completly on an esoteric-trip, spends his time with "channeling" and recommends links with promising names like /Lightnet/Celestial/Jesus2.htm. From time to time he has little realizations which he let's us know about in the "News" or "Poetry" section - depending on their nature an artistic content. As Sony Music refused to follow Terence into Sananda-land, one of the most talented musicians of today doesn't have a contract. He has to give away his album for free via Pro7-Online and is forced to collect inquiries for interviews on his website. Graphics are relatively unattractive and esoteric. But the content is very good. The master publishes letters and takes part in the conversation with fans, his spiritual aura is omnipresent. Video-interviews show the visitor something about the artists state of mind. By the way, he still releases albums as Terence Trent D'Arby.
