Review: Terence Trent D'Arby/Sananda Maitreya
By ROB CLARK / The Dallas Morning News
 |
It's been eight long years since we've
heard from the immensely talented Terence Trent D'Arby.
Since then he's changed his name to Sananda Maitreya,
but he's smart enough to keep his former moniker front
and center on his fifth album.
Wildcard! is so good that it makes you wonder
where he's been all this time. It hooks you in immediately
with the ultra-catchy "O Divina," featuring
his joyful and soul-soaked vocals. Ditto for "My
Dark Places," a mellow tune so pleasing to the
ear. |
The album switches gears from guitar-fueled
rock tracks to chilly funk to sweet ballads. It may run
a bit long, and the dizzying variety can trip up its momentum.
But Wildcard! is an ace. Mr. D'Arby/Maitreya jumps
to the front of the list for comeback of the year honors.
