She Kissed Me

She is negative as can be
And she’s weak emotionally
But she kissed me
And she put it there...

Terence Trent D’Arby, the ever-acclaimed soulman who had a number one Eighties hit with “Wishing Well,” as well as other hits, revved “She Kissed Me” across the beginning of Symphony or Damn.

The song is driving rock laced with D’Arby’s tempted soul. Gondry’s video is just as hot. The red and orange-saturated video begins with a boy stepping up to the ticket booth of an X-rated movie theater a la Jean-Baptiste Mondino’s “Open Your Heart” video for Madonna.

The ticket lady denies the boy entrance to see the film “She Kissed Me.” So instead he decides to peruse photos posted all over the booth, with images taken from movie scenes. Soon the images come to life.

Throughout the video, the people in the pictures interact with each other, much like Gondry’s “Hou! Mamma Mia” video, produced a few months before.

The camera scans across the various pictures as the video progresses. A couple scenes involve a man in the film accidentally hitting himself in another picture. The two versions of the man duke it out. Eventually one is thrown out of the picture.

In the first case, the man lands in a picture of a sexy woman sitting in her bathtub, as assisted by a sexy blonde woman from another picture. In the second case, the man falls and hangs onto the top edge of a movie poster.

His weight rips it down, and the tiny man runs back to the booth, entering a picture of the blonde woman being chased.

During the song’s raging guitar solo, the blonde reaches outside of her picture and grabs a picture of D’Arby raging down the highway in his car. She takes the picture and “drives” him up her body, illuminated by his headlights.

D’Arby then gets away and drives around a few of the scenes. At the end of the video, the boy tears one of the photos off the booth, and speeds victoriously down the street.
